- 1.
What would your first 90 days as a executive & c-suite look like?
Why they ask it: The default executive interview question. It tests restraint as much as ambition.
A strong answer: Listening and diagnosis before change, one or two early credibility wins, and the decision you'd defer until you have data.
- 2.
Tell me about the hardest people decision you've made.
Why they ask it: Executive credibility rests on doing hard things humanely and decisively.
A strong answer: The performance or structural reality, how long you took, how you handled the person's dignity, and the effect on the team.
- 3.
How do you set strategy when the market is moving under you?
Why they ask it: Tests whether strategy means a document or a set of live bets.
A strong answer: A clear thesis with named tradeoffs, the signals that would change it, and evidence you've changed one before.
- 4.
Walk me through a time you turned around an underperforming function.
Why they ask it: Executive hires are usually bought to fix something specific.
A strong answer: The diagnosis, the sequence (people, then process, then system), the numbers before and after, and how long it took.
- 5.
How do you work with a board that disagrees with you?
Why they ask it: Board management is a distinct skill from running a company.
A strong answer: Pre-wiring conversations before the meeting, presenting options rather than a single ask, and disagreeing without destabilising.
- 6.
What's your track record on capital allocation?
Why they ask it: At this level, the job is deciding where money and people go.
A strong answer: A specific bet you made, the reasoning, the return, and one that didn't work and what you did about it.
